About Flora B's Bakery

Named After a Woman I Never Met

Flora B's Bakery is named after my grandmother, Flora B. — a wife, a mother of eight, and a woman who believed that feeding people was one of the greatest acts of love.

By all accounts, she was soft-spoken and laid back — the kind of woman who let her actions speak louder than her words. But she would always speak up when it mattered. She cooked Sunday dinners for her family and her pastor. She fed anyone who came to her door hungry, no questions asked. Her kitchen was never just a place to make food — it was a place where people felt seen, welcomed, and cared for.

She passed away before I was born, so I never got to sit at her table or learn her recipes firsthand. But the more I learned about her, the more I realized — we are kindred spirits. Because cooking and baking for people is my love language too.

My Journey to the Kitchen

My path to Flora B’s Bakery wasn’t a straight line — and I think that’s exactly what makes it meaningful. I’ve spent years working as a speech therapist — a career I still hold today. But somewhere along the way, I knew I was meant to be pursuing something that truly lit me up from the inside.

So at 38, while working full-time from home, I enrolled at the Escoffier School of Culinary Arts and pursued an Associate Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. I graduated in November 2023 with a 4.0 GPA — the highest GPA I’ve ever earned across all two of my degrees.

My externship required 12 weeks of hands-on training completed entirely on weekends — which meant 7 days a week, no breaks. Working from home during the week was a blessing that made it possible. Almost no days off — because even superwoman got sick one weekend and had to rest. But she showed back up the next week and finished strong.

Did I cry over failed assignments? Yes. Did I scream at myself when something didn’t come out right? Absolutely. Did I burn myself along the way? More than once — but what baker hasn’t? I’m still a perfectionist. Still learning to give myself grace. But every tear, every burn, and every late night in that kitchen lives in every single bake that leaves my door.

Today I show up every day as both a speech therapist and a baker — because real life doesn't wait for the perfect moment, and neither did I. Flora B's Bakery is what happens when you stop waiting and start building, one bake at a time. It's not just a business. It's a calling I chose to answer while life was still happening all around me.

Why I Do This

When a Flora B's box arrives at your door, I hope you feel the warmth, the care, and the love that went into every single bite. I hope it takes you somewhere familiar. I hope it reminds you of Sunday afternoons, of someone's kitchen that always smelled like something good, or being fed by someone who loved you.

That's what Flora B's is really about. Not just desserts — but moments. Memories. Connection.

"The best memories are often made around food. I'm just here to help you make a few more."

Thank you for being here. Thank you for trusting Flora B's with your moments. I don't take that lightly — and I promise, neither does Grandma Flora. 🌸
